When did you make the move out to California?
October 2009.
Did you have anything lined up work-wise?
Nope, I moved here and got a job at Starbucks working nights till 1:00AM for 5-6 days a week, for about 6 months.
What is the first thing you can remember doing when you arrived in Cali?
Haha, I remember the line of traffic I hit at 5:00 when I showed up.
What do you feel California's lacking that Austin's not?
Hospitality.
And the same in reverse - what's Austin lacking that Cali's not?
Hundreds of casting directors, thousands of movie directors, million dollar budgets, investors just waiting for a good script to read, Hollywood... As stereotypical as it sounds, it's why I came here. There is a ton of opportunity here, whether it be in production work or in the entertainment industry. One of the things I didn't really realize, it didn't sink in until about 3 months into it out here, is the amount of work that is happening in this city.
When you decided you needed to move, did you consider any other places, or was it always clear you'd end up in Cali?
I thought about moving here 5 years ago, I realized I needed to move here about 2 years ago. Cali is the place where most movies and T.V. shows are cast. There is way too much energy here towards films for me to move anywhere else. And when I'm around all that energy, it sucks me in. This place has definitely taught me a ton about the real film making business.
Did you give yourself a time limit? Like, if I feel things aren't progressing in X amount of time, then it's time for Plan B.
Yeah, maybe when I'm 35 if I haven't made a feature film yet.... then I'll go to school, but personally I don't ever see that happening. Goals in filmmaking can take a long long time. Here in LA most actors spend about 10 years making a name. Directors can start working in their 40's. Goals here aren't always reached over night, like the T.V. makes you think they are.
If you have a Plan B, what is it?
Professional beach bum.
What's a normal day consist of for you?
Waking up, around 6AM, making a good breakfast, working out, coming home and working on the computer or memorizing lines, yoga in the evening with some studying at the park (either reading a book about screen writing or acting), dinner, maybe watch a movie before bed or work on a screenplay.
Heard any good horror stories (that you can share) of people's experiences looking for acting jobs?
Wow, you know I haven't heard a whole lot, but I can tell you right now, Hollywood is the only place where you can die from compliments. "Yeah I love it baby!" The BLVD of broken dreams is what some people call it. I don't ever expect to be famous, yeah it would be nice to work, but I'm here with the rest of the kooks doing what I love to do, making narrative films.
When you get low on funds, what is the first thing in your life that suffers?
My weight.. haha, I don't get to eat as much.
Create a perfect living scenario for yourself in 7 words.
Perfect life scenariooooo. First off, it would be nice to be able to afford to live closer to the water, or it would be nice for the feature script I've been writing to get picked up, or even pulling a national commercial would be nice. I think I'd be happy with just making a decent living off of film/commercial work here.
Have you ever had a conversation with yourself in the mirror?
Ummm, yeah... haha, well, not a full conversation, but sometimes, I like to find the truth in a scene by watching myself in the mirror, but usually it just makes me self-conscious - the opposite of what I should be feeling while saying lines.
Is there anything in your life that going to ride your bike is the only cure for?
Stress Relief. The City of Angels can be very, very stressfull - smog, traffic, kooked people with alternative motives, vanity vanity vanity. Living in vanity out here, everywhere, plastic surgery. Yep, BMX doesn't really have too much of that. You don't see kids walking around with perfect teeth, all fake... Well, you know what, I take that back, if they do have them, they don't have them for a perfect smile, they have them to replace a busted grill.
What have you done in your life that has made you feel the most proud?
Moving here to Los Angeles, finally making a move in my life towards something I've always wanted to do, but never been in the right mindset, or had enough experience to do it. Austin is an amazing city, but I've lived there all my life, since I was 3. There is a mentality that goes along with it, ya know. Austin slacker, stoner, unproductiveness, pure fun, lots of sun. It's like a paradise sometimes, tons of cute girls, non-stop parties, but after a while, and after 22 years of it, I needed something else. A change, a career move.
Do you have anything that keeps you awake at night?
Sometimes. Work, production work, sometimes stress, sometimes excitement if I book a gig or if I have a big audition for maybe a lead role in a big film, or T.V. show.
Finally, if you could teleport back to Austin once a month, where would you go to eat?
Mr Natural!!! I'll be there in August, can't wait for the lunch special... Their corn tortillas are amazing, the spinach salad, with black beans..... Yep. The breakfast tacos are pretty good as well. I would say Whole Foods also, but you know what? Whole Foods have sprouted in Cali like wild flowers!
